With all that temptations that we can now find everywhere, there are hard control our eyes what to watch, along with endless flood of all kinds of threats around; murder, stealing, drug dealing and most important lack of respect for each other. As much as a government may promise its citizens a high level of security against such events, believe me too much contribution must come from you as an individual in the end.

More so there are certain dangerous events which are above our control such as earthquakes, floods, terrorist attacks, which can only be avoided through learning how to act in such situations, know at least basics of self defense and most important taking the right precautions to do everything possible to avoid this risks. There are also long term issues associated with the kind of diets we partake every day, just remember the common saying, ‘you are what you eat’.

The Family Survival Course Book which can be downloaded at members area, along with additional information is one which provides you real information obtained from personal experiences. In addition to this, the book provides step by step instructions on how to maintain the security level of your family.
Methods such as use of herbal medicines prove to be one of the most efficient kinds of treatments, when compared to other drugs which may contain harmful chemicals, putting the lives of your loved ones at risk.

Homemade foods, as suggested in the available for download survival eBooks, serve a good information on not expensive and healthy foods for long term healthy living, do not play big international companies game giving them huge profits for unhealthy foods.

The book comes with instructions on how to keep your home safe from intruders by using cheap and easily available methods. It has also suggested methods to ensure there is constant homemade power throughout to ensure the compound is well lit so as to keep away thugs and you always has enough energy for your household needs.

In the event of terrorism attacks, the book has given guidelines to ensure you remain safe throughout, despite the undying efforts the government may employ to ensure you get security which may not be forthcoming at all. Designed as all in one field ration solution for situations when regular food supplies are limited, from 1981 when Meals Ready To eat rations first time are issued to troops as replacements of earlier issued “Meal, Combat, Individual ration” packs, this rations menu contents constantly changes every year. If in first ration pack only 13 menus are included, today there 24 different choices so almost everyone can find out suitable, also vegetarians as from 1996 vegetarian only meals are included too.

Have high calories and sodium count, these meals are generally designed for combat and other stress situations when more the usually calories are needed to supply body with additional energy and sodium which are lost via excessive sweating during action thus making MRE good addition to your bug out bag or emergency food storage shelf. If you have access to military surplus store check for possible menu choices, more likely you have some preferred meals so if there are possibility to make combination of what you really like, this would be really great as in emergency situation or anytime when you want to use your MRE, eating something that you do not want not anyhow make your life easier.

Before stock up with meals ready to eat for emergency purposes, anyone would like to know about MRE’s shelf life and how long you can be sure that this rations are safe to eat? In general, length of food storage, no matter what type is it, depends on storage temperature, the hotter temperature, the less time your food preserve nutrients and original taste, so lower temperature will dramatically increase your food life span. Just check for package integrity, designed to withstand battlefield abuse, even rugged MRE’s packaging can be damaged if stored improperly or teared with sharp objects. As long your packaging is sealed and stored in cool place, you are safe.

The U.S. Army Soldier System Center state that “The MRE’s shelf life is three years at 80 degrees F and six months at 100 degrees F.”. Actually as noted by multiple sources, if stored properly, MRE shelf life can be extended up to ten years or even more. To achieve optimal shelf life, storage temperature should not exceed 60 F° (16 C°) and meals should not be stored at temperatures below 30oF (-1 C°) as frozen packaging can result in broken seals and leading to to extremely fast shelf life expiration. Also you should know that storage temperature and storage time have cumulative effect – if your storehouse has wide temperature changes, this can leave serious impact on shelf life too.

Another remark about shelf life, even if MRE has reached end of the shelf life, nutrient level and calories of almost do not decrease, as shelf life is actually calculated by taste and flavor level of meal. It’s not be 100 percent safe to consume meals with ten or more years old expiration date, but in worst case scenario if I have decision to eat some rats or expired meals ready to eat, I definitely choose MRE’s. Also to make life easier and take out guessing part, in recent years, time and temperature indicators or so called TTI’s are included into each meal box. Temperature indicator consists from two circles, inner and outer, if inner circle is lighter then outer circle, your meal is safe to eat.

If you are still unsure about purchased MRE expiration date, you can try decode production date with this simple formula. For example, MRE’s box has stamped serial number like 9114A C9R2. First number in our serial encode as year, in our case this is 2009, if we do not have REALLY old package from 1999. Numbers 114 represent day of the year – April 24. Other numbers and characters has production batch number. So finally we can decode serial number as in April 24, 2009 made box.

Be safe and be prepared!

Good ol’ time proven candle is a true multi purpose item in your survival kit. Keep several candles in your survival gear bug out bag do not overweight your gear, but can play key role in various situations. With just one tea candle and poncho you can heat up yourself in cold and windy weather, candle with additional citronella aroma can help you get rid of nasty mosquito in summer, you can use candles for light, cooking and water boiling, signaling, fire starting – just about everything where fire, heat or light is required. No wonder why they are included into all survival kit checklists, including kits designed for military and search and rescue personnel.

Nowdays, most of candles are made from paraffin, instead beeswax, although soy, tallow and other wax like substances sometimes are used for candle production. Dedicated for “survival cases” candles often are packed into metal tins and have two or more wicks if you require more heat and light for example emergency cooking. Manufacturer rated by various burn time you have plenty of different choices around so if you still think about need or not this type of survival gear in your go bag, it’s strongly suggested have at least several as reserve.

What survival candles works best and what makes “candles made for emergency” differ from “standard” ones? Basically two things, more then one wick and metal casing. There are no any special chemical composition or anything else, so if you have chance buy long lasting holiday candle for right price, this will work out too. My most preferred time to hunt after cheap candles bargains are after major holidays like Christmas, you can easily stock up your emergency candles supply paying often less then half from usual price.

If you have collection of used and not fully burned candles or better block with paraffin or wax, with metal tin, tin from pastilles would be good enough, cotton wick and a bit of patience you can build your very own survival candle. Steps how to make survival candle by yourself are very simple, in first chop your paraffin source into smallest possible peaces to speed up melting process, put it into some old tin or kettle and wait till paraffin or wax is melted into liquid form. Fill your metal tin with liquid substance, wait a bit, then stick your wicks into tin. Try place wicks in equal space from each other and do not over saturate, two or three would be quite enough for average candies tin or you are not able burn your wicks separately. As soon wicks are planted, put your survival candle into fridge or outdoor if there are cold enough. Wait some hours and here we go – our self made survival candle is ready!

Some extra fire starting tools like weatherproof matches with striker would be good additional feature of your self made emergency candle. Glue them on the tin lid inner side. After completing this simple steps you have nice and handy emergency fire, light and heat source for your car, bugout bag, boat or house.

If your emergency supplies shelf still lack of water, act now and fulfill your water supplies as soon as possible, storage containers are cheap and make them full right now cost you almost nothing, but in case of disaster you found that even several sips of clear water often worth more then all world treasures together. Today shortages of water supply are very common even in places where just several years ago none would ever think about it and nothing will change this in near future. Free access to clear water become more likely and extra even to average well situated family, if you live in city or town, do you remember how much you must pay for water ten years ago and now? Prices are increased and this is just a beginning.

Your body deserve clean water for functionality and well being every day, 24/7. It would be good idea time by time check your current water supply too. We never know, what if in past years someone has utilized dangerous chemicals or biologically active waste near your home water source? Even in “clear water” you can find wide range of dangerous substances which on long run can make serious damage to your health. Of course, if you find something wrong with your water, you can setup various choices of water filters, with a little effort, you can set up suitable filter for reasonable money, which are useful to cleaning harmful bacteria, chemical contamination, unpleasant odors and tastes from your water. But what if you camping outdoor or try what worse experience emergency situation? For camping purposes or emergency water filtration in general you have four choices of water purification – boil water, chemically process your water with iodine or chlorine, expose to UV light radiation or process your water trough water filters. If you are unsure about your water, to avoid waterborne illness better combine this methods together for more secure purification.

Water Purification by Boiling
One of the oldest methods of emergency water purification – rapidly boil your water for about 10 minutes and then filter trough some kind simple filter like cloth or paper towel to remove possible dirt. Although you still have microorganisms and bacterias in your water, they are made inactive by high temperature. If you need large amounts this can be time consuming, but in same time one of the most cheapest ways to decontaminate water.

Water purification by Chemicals
Two types of chemicals are generally used for water treatment iodine and chlorine. Due several possible contraindications when iodine is used as treatment, chlorine is most favorite choice for municipal water processing plants. For effective treatment, water should be mechanically cleared from large dirt with some kind of mechanical filter and if possible heated up till 60 Farenheit (15 C°), in this case after 30 minutes you are able drink your purified water. Unfortunately chemical treatment leave some notable change in water taste, but if you do not have other choices at emergency situation, this is definitely better then nothing. Based on chlorine Aquatabs is one of the most popular water cleaning pills on market with shelf life of 5 years this should be a must have item in any survival kit.

Water purification by UV light
Processing water with Ultra Violet light radiation sterilizes water making bacteria and micro organisms inactive without altering final taste of water, less then minute is required to disinfect amount equal liter (33.8 Ounces) of water. There are stationary UV devices for your home and portable UV purification devices like SteriPEN, well known in backpacker and other outdoor enthusiasts communities. To get most out of your UV purifier, water should be clear as possible from foreign elements and mud, so additional filtration from dirt is required.

Emergency water filters
Although emergency water filters tend to be more expensive then designed for general household use, they higher price compensate effective filtering from as most as 99.9% of various microorganisms, bacterias and other impurities which made this type of filters very handy at camping trip or disaster / crisis situation. Most of today advanced emergency water filters are based on ceramic micropore filtering design with hard to beat resource, compared to other filtering methods. Several design emergency water filters are available for sale, ones that require pumping water trough filtration system and other that use gravity to flow water trough filter. Pump based purification systems are often more compact and companies like MSR and Katadyn make wide variety of different purpose models, from individual survival filters till expedition size team water supply.

But if you are trapped outdoors without sufficient clear water supply or lost your gear including favorite water filter / water sterilization device? In such case boiling and self made emergency water filter is a way to go. Avoid drink directly to stay away from waterborne illness bacterias which can easily kick out you for a days of serious illness with high temperature, diarrhea and vomiting, but also in worst case lead to long and painful death if you are unlucky enough (rarely in not REALLY contaminated areas, but who wants to check, right?). So in first step clean your water with DIY emergency filter, then boil and more likely you are safe from possible problems with contaminated water.

Simple and effective DIY survival water filter from plastic bottle, handful of grass, sand and charcoal from fireplace. Very handy for first stage filtration from muddy water. If you have really dirty water, several repeating steps or even two such filters – first for general cleaning from mud and second for more comprehensive filtration may be required. Boiling is required after this filtration stage.

All servings are packed into Mylar foil pouches which are easy to open and store, each pouch has oxygen absorber and are stored into handy and stack able 6.5 gallon plastic container. If stored in dry and cool place, this kit can be stock up for 15 years. Also notable remark about this set – this freeze dried food contains no dangerous additive – mono sodium glutamate or MSG (E621) and no high fructose corn syrup which decrease storage life, but leave original taste and are real deal who even in emergency situation or everyday life want consume food with less possible additives. Each kit are made to provide one person with 2100 calories / day nutrients for whole month.

Freeze dried meals included into one ARK kit: sixty servings of Oatmeal, 30 servings of Mixed Vegetables, 60 servings of Instant Potatoes, thirty servings of Macaroni & Cheese, thirty servings of Beef Flavored Vegetable Stew, 30 servings of Cheddar Broccoli Rice, thirty servings of Chicken Vegetable Stew and 60 servings of Hearty Potato Soup.

Although this kit has decreased storage life compared to other survival food kits, less additives can be a good argument to people who think about what they eat and 15 years are still plenty of time to think about slow food rotation at backpacker camping. hunting/fishing trips or other outdoor adventures where weight is critical and this type of food is a good portable choice for your backpack.

Being exposed for harsh sub zero winter temperatures can radically decrease chances to survive if you do not know what to do or start panicking, hypothermia is a “merciful killer” number one (people who die from hypothermia fall asleep feeling themselves sleepy and false warm when body temperature actually go colder and colder) which depending on how low is temperature can take your life away in less the hour. Yes, this is scary, but there are a lot of people around who live almost all year long in sub zero temperatures and do their jobs and have fun without any doubts about their survival ability. Are they somehow different from us? Definitely no! They just know right winter live and survival recipes and follow it every day.

Winter survival recipes are simple to follow and anyone should know them as you never know when disaster strikes, as you more likely know previous years our climate changes even in territories, where none should expect not only sub zero temperatures, but also thing like snow. Read and remember main winter survival recipes and talk about this recipes with your family, friends and co-workers, possibly that in emergency situation they remember your hints and that information save their life.

Warm winter clothes
Always wear appropriate clothes, a golden rule is that’s better to have something to put off, then having less then you need. Most of winter emergency situations happen when people thoughtlessly think about their clothing layer and when unexpected situation strike, their face that planned trip to mall which usually take five minutes outside while waring light sweater only, suddenly become into crazy winter survival within wrecked car in the middle of nowhere at 2 AM. So clothing is a must, also if you driving a car it’s a clever choice put some additional blankets or extra layer of winter clothes into your car trunk, pack it in into some box and better take this box out from your car in the spring time then die from hypothermia in winter.

Fire and warmth, avoiding hypothermia
Fire starting tools, thermos with tea or coffee in your bag, some tea candles or if possible bigger long lasting candles together with some packs of chemical heaters would make your survival task easier in case of emergency, most of them easy fit into your bag or outerwear pockets and can actually save your live in combination with moving and not letting yourself just sit down and wait for some miracle to come.

Food and water in sub zero temperatures
Have high calorie food in your bag or pockets, as soon you think that something go wrong eat it as soon as possible, you need energy for your body and mind, energy means movement and movement in winter means life. Plan your ration in case of longer emergency situation, but remember that you need good initial energy boost, so always have something like high energy bars, high calorie chocolate with nuts and so on. I suggest check your local sport equipment shop and look for energy bars with mix of high proteins, vitamins and other nutrients for extreme workout.

This is wrong to think that body dehydration can happen in hot climate only, winter with sub zero temperature require no less water then in hot summer. With breath water leave your body fast, so do not forget about good source of liquid for your water supply. If possible have additional hot or at least warm liquid like tea or coffee, it’s always better get some additional warmth. Do not rely on drinking water, melted from snow, boiling snow into water take time and additional heat source is required, it’s OK to have some portable kettle in your survival kit to cook hot food and boil water for hot beverages while longer emergencies, but in first time you need reliable water source.

Winter shelter
Basically you need something to stay behind to save you from cold winter winds and low temperature, this can be tent square, snow wall, leeside of trees or bushes, pile of brushes or combination of them all, you should know that even mild sub zero temperature in combination with wind chill out your body fast, so find your cover as soon as possible. If you are in car, you can try heat it up with candle or just use it as temporary shelter, do not forget leave small opening for ventilation, this is a must!

Basic survival kit
There are loads of different basic survival kits checklists around, main recommendations are the same. You need light, LED lights lasts long and chem lights sticks are cheap and useful for various tasks. For your information, chemical reaction in chem lights sticks are longer and expose less light in lower temperatures, same for batteries, they tend to discharge faster in sub zero, so good place for your spare power sources is closer to body or any other heat source. Good roll with paracord or other strong rope for various tasks, customized for your own needs first aid kit, knife and multi tool, portable axe and saw if you driving car and of course rugged snow spade and good quality fordable or small size spade for digging out your car or cleaning path.

Some broad recipes on winter survival. Have your phone or radio battery charged and your communication device placed near your body to save battery charge. If your even think that you may have any emergency situation on road, while traveling or hiking, immediately call your relatives and told them where you are and how they can find you. If you have choice do not go outside in extreme cold or blizzard, better stay at home, why take unneeded risk? Better wait and decrease your chances of getting into trouble. Avoid any alcohol and medicines which can affect your mind and possibility to take right decisions, everyone know and can told a story about person who die in winter while being drunk, don’t become into “one of them”.

If you are in your car, remember about exhaust and carbon monoxide, make sure that your car exhaust tube are free of trash and snow and nothing come into your car cabin, become unconscious from carbon monoxide can happen just in time of one minute, one moment you feel yourself fine, several seconds later you are unconscious, some minutes later – you are dead. Do not use your car engine for heating, make fire from roadside debris, gasoline, everything that can burn. On blizzard use rope to do any task outside your car, loosing orientation on nervous emergency situation and do not find way back to your car are not rare case.

Do not panic! Again, do not panic! Any situation with panic “sauce” always become just worse, wrong decisions are taken and easy solutions are just forgotten, so do not panic!

That’s all, main winter survival recipes are simple, just think, be calm, follow rules made by centuries of actual people, stay safe and be prepared!

To complete useful survival gear checklist, in first you must answer yourself several simple questions, first and most important where and in what emergency situation you use your survival gear? Is it survival kit for your car, for your boat, bug out bag or simple small packet with EDC (Every Day Carry) items in case of emergency? Any way you use your kit, there are some basics which you should know to put in really important things, but not “useful trash” which in first eye sight looks like real deal.

Customized survival gear kit for each important location is preferred, with duplicate items you can be sure that you have backup option anytime, but invest into useful and quality stuff cost you plenty of cash, so good option for anyone who count their expenses is made modular survival gear checklist and when you are in your car, boat, plane or own foot at wilderness camping trip, all your current gear has only right items included. We can talk endless hours about quality and price / performance ratio, but in general, one thing which an fit you, other may find unsuitable, so each of us must decide by yourself, what from this various choices fit your needs.

When I choose gear for my needs, I try to find out all possible information on it, to be sure that I do not miss any important nuance, after I choose and get equipment I test them on lifelike situations in my camping / hunting / fishing trips, so I can be sure that in emergency situations I know what to do and how it works. Don’t relay just on “backyard test”, grab your gear and go outside, you have great fun outdoors and compared to many “sofa survivalists” have real experience without extreme stress when disaster strikes.

Back to our gear checklist, good first core layer of extra usable and hard to be without items is a must to start complete your survival gear bag. This is items you carry every day in your pockets or bag, this is items without them you do not go outside your house. Main rule there, KIS – keep it simple, if you make large list most likely you forgot it or found heavy and to hard to carry every day and finally when you really need something you have nothing as your gear are left in car, at your office or so on.

What items add to your core survival gear list? It’s really depends on your everyday life, but good overall choice for basic kit is nothing special, but useful items which can help you in everyday tasks, like small and portable flashlight, one that go to your keyring and do not take over place would be nice choice, LED’s are very powerful these days and consume small amount of energy and on same batteries sets lasts for years, small Swiss army style pocket knife or multi tool like Leatherman for various tasks, small packet with some medical plasters, several foots of thin rope or thin wire for quick repairs and some needles should be good addition to it. Yes, that’s simple, better carry less but have it anytime that make huge list and finally do not have anything.

To expand your selection just think in the way what you really can use and not what you just want to buy for your survival gear collection. There are various gadgets around, which promise for us a lot of different feature but for real are just same old things just wrapped into shiny wrapping, so check before if it is really what I need to accomplish my task? To help out put only right gear in your survival gear checklist there are six main groups, in which fit all needed gear.

Signaling
In emergency situation you need to be seen by evacuation or search and rescue team, paramedics or just passing plane, boat, people or car. Various signaling devices can be used, from signaling mirrors, flares, visible and infrared light strobes or electronic distress transmitters, till simple fire and smoke. Think about your possible emergency situations and get at least several different choices, some of them like signaling mirror do not make your bag to heavy but can provide good ability to be seen and attract attention in worst case scenario when quick help is required.

Personal protection
Tents, so called “Space Blankets”, rainproof ponchos and your surrounding climate zone and weather suitable clothes, always think about adding one extra layer of heating as you never know in what and in what condition (injured, wet, tired) and in what kind of emergency situation you may be involved.

Tools
There come knifes, multi tools, axes, saws and other tools required to do something like building shelter, fix your gear, listen to emergency broadcasts, cook or heat your meal, start a fire or dug out some roots and catch a fish for your dinner. Do not let your tools just lay in the bag, go to camping trips and train your skills how to use and what you can do with them, this is fastest way find out any cons and pros including receiving real life training. Tools that do no “do” anythings are dead, you do not know how it’s work and if this really work, leaving pile of tools for “later” can crash all illusions at the time when you need them.

Food and water
Without proper food and water supply your chances reduce with every hour in emergency situation. Dehydration is extremely dangerous and often lead to death, this is essential to have enough water to your body for proper functioning. Food with long storage life, high on calories and possibility to be eaten without any cooking is always preferred for short emergency periods or for disaster first period when you do not have time to make fire and make delicious edibles for your pleasure. Also think about water needed for cooking, count them in with reserve if you have dry freeze food or anything that require water to cook.

First aid
Take a note that most of first aid kits at best are made for quick preparation of injured or diseased person before future evacuation, think about it when comply your own first aid kit, do you can rely on fast evacuation? How fast search and rescue team will come to you? Hour, day, several days, week or possibly never? Depending on this think what fit your first aid kit best, customizing it depending on your own needs and personal medicine threatening.

Reusable multi purpose supplies
Wire and rope in various sizes, plastic trash and zip lock bags for waterproof storage and emergency shelter building, heavy duct type, some various sizes carabiners, waterproof plastic or aluminum containers for storage. Put in some book, preferably with useful information like survival instructions, your area edible and in medicine usable plants descriptions, anything that is worth to carry on in your bag when you are on your feet.

Whatever you have in your bag, you must know how to use it, without knowledge everything is just a “dead weight” in your bug out or go bag, so go outside, explore interesting places, enjoy your outdoor experience with friends and you not only earn know how knowledge but also have great time outdoors!

Stay safe, and be prepared!
